Alouette 1 Topside Sounder, UCLA Electron Density Profiles, 1962-63 (ASCII)

Availability: Archived at NSSDC, accessible from elsewhere

Time span: 1962-09-30 to 1964-05-02

This data set, prepared at the UCLA Department of Meteorology, consists of electron density profiles for the ionosphere above the F2 maximum (topside ionosphere). The electron density profiles were computed from digital values of frequency and virtual height that were scaled from ionograms. Satellite location, satellite height, and time (UT) of observation are listed for each profile. For many profiles the extrapolated maximum density and its real height are included. Profile data consist of density and real height values for each 25 km from 1000 km down to the lowest topside height from which reflections were observed. Electron density is also provided at satellite altitude. This data set consists of chronologically ordered observations, providing ~15,000 profiles from late 1962 to early 1963. The data were originally provided on a 7-track, 800-bpi, odd-parity, binary magnetic tape written on an IBM 360 computer. NSSDC prepared an ASCII version that is available on-line at
