Blackout: Solar Storms and Their Effects on Planet Earth (Video)

NSSDCA ID: SPMS-00672

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

Description

This educational video tape, produced by the NASA IMAGE mission, illustrates, with 3D animation, the phenomenal eruptions of our Sun and their effects upon the earth. Enormous ejections of solar material (Coronal Mass Ejections) and solar flares come alive as intense extremes of "space weather". These events can have serious effects on power grids, communication, pipe lines, and satellites.

See http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/poetry/activities.html for further details and a sample of an animated sequence.
