NSSDCA ID: PSPA-00288
Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)
This data set contains the Mariner 9 ultraviolet spectrometer stack tapes which have been copied onto a CD-WO volume for preservation purposes. The input data for this CD volume were originally archived on 7-track magnetic tapes. There are 8 tapes stored on this volume, tape ID's CJG-001 to CJG-008.
The disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs). The 7-track data in this dataset was padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits. The 7-track tape data was originally written in "SNAKED" format with attached EBCDIC VICAR labels in front of the data. The file CJG_INFO.TXT located on the CD, correlates the tape ID with descriptions of the tapes' contents. The tape descriptions were obtained from the exterior tape labels and available information contained in the MIPS On-line tape database.
This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.
This is SDDPT data set code 71_051A_0060, volume ID M71_6101.
