SDDPT Mariner 10 Master Data Records

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

Ancillary data are not needed for the proper use of these data

This data set contains the Mariner 10 Master Data Records (MDR) copied from magnetic tapes to CD-WO as part of the Science Digital Data Preservation Task. Each volume in the set includes ancillary information in addition to instrument data. The Science Data Evaluation Board has recommended that the MDRs should be archived on higher density media. The data was copied from 7-track magnetic tapes that, in most cases, were at least 15-20 years old.

Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs). A text file correlating the tape ID, a description of the tape's contents, and the archive CD-ROM volume is included on the last disc of the series. The 7-track data in this dataset was padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits.

This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.

This is SDDPT data set code 73_085A_0006, volume IDs MVM_4001 to MVM_4073.
