This data set contains the Viking 2 Orbiter Engineering Experiment Data Records (EDRs). The input data for these CD volumes were originally archived on 15 to 20 year old 7-track and 9-track magnetic tapes. The data were transferred to CD-WO as part of the Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT). Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records.
Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history. Therefore, if problems were encountered while recovering the data from tape, they will be documented in the log file. The 7-track data in this dataset were padded. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the 2 high order bits (the parity bit and the extra blank bit). The 7-track tape data was originally written in "SNAKED" format with attached EBCDIC VICAR labels in front of the data. The 9-track data files are comprised of fixed length records - for more detail on the exact file structure, consult the COPY_LOG file accompanying each tape. More information on the CD's, formats, and processing is available in the AAREADME file on each disk.
This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.
This is SDDPT data set code 75-083A-0014, volume IDs VO_1109 - VO_1115.
