This data set contains Viking Orbiter Radio Science Data copied from 7-track magnetic tapes onto CD-WO as part of the Science Digital Data Preservation Task. The data were copied from a collection of tapes that, in most cases, were at least 15-20 years old. The tapes include radio science tracking orbit data, stack tapes, TDRP, and finran merge. The file PD_INFO.TXT is included on each CD in the series, and it correlates the tape ID and a description of the tape's contents. The 6 bit characters were padded to 8 bits by placing zeroes into the two high order bits. Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs).
This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. In general, these data are stored at NSSDC for archive, not distribution, puroses. The data are not always in a readily accessible form. In order to request this data, please talk to the NSSDC contact person listed for this data set.
This is SDDPT data set code 75_075A_0008, volume ID VO_6101 - 6110.
