This data set consists of a book published in Russian and translated into English. The book contains farside lunar surface photographs obtained by the Russian spacecraft Zond 3 as it flew by the moon. They cover about the same part of the moon covered by Luna 3, the first spacecraft to obtain farside photographs. The trajectory dynamics were such that the illuminated portion of the lunar surface was mostly the farside of the moon. In addition to the photographs, the book contains sections on (1) Zond 3 spacecraft and flight, (2) onboard phototelevision system, (3) selenographic coordinates for the eastern section of the farside of the moon, (4) interpretation of the Zond 3 photographs, (5) identification of features photographed by Luna 3 and Zond 3, (6) distribution density, size, and form of craters, (7) topographic features derived by the photometric method, (8) photometric characteristics, and (9) a short global view of the lunar surface. The section on identification of features photographed by Luna 3 and Zond 3 gives serial number, ID, UT, coordinates of identified features, dimensions, frame number, and page number. This data set is available for viewing at NSSDC. It could be made available as microfiche by special request, but the picture quality will be of limited use.
A digital scan of this book is available as data collection PSPG-00959.
