This collection is comprised of the PI-provided level_0 data from the RIMS instrument. It includes all available data from the DE-RIMS mission. The data cover the time period from 07 October 1981 to 15 November 1989. The data are provided as Mission Analysis Files (MAF).
Each MAF file data record consists of 8 s of RIMS data (512 samples, each sample is a 1/64 s measurement), in time order. One record is 5624 bytes in size. The first 100 locations (16-bit words) of this record contain timing, orbit/attitude, magnetic field, and instrument mode information (see MAFORMAT and VOLDESC documents).
This data set includes the following documents: CATALOGUE.TXT - An ASCII listing of the on/off times and data quality; CATALOGUE.SFD - A description of the CATALOGUE.TXT file; MAFORMAT.SFD - A description of the Mission Analysis File format; RIMSMODE.SFD - A description of the RIMSMODE.TXT file (mode changes); VOLDESC.SFD - A description of the instrument, MAFs, Modes, etc; RIMSMODE.TXT - An ASCII listing of the instrument modes. In addition software is provided to decode the instrument flags, determination of RPA/IMS settings, and decommutation of the D and E channels (Z-head data). Alltogether there are more than 70 source files and a SUBROUTINE.SFD text file with a description of all subroutines.
GIF images of orbital pass plots can be viewed on the RIMS homepage at http://wwwssl.msfc.nasa.gov/ssl/pad/sppb/RIMS/.
