Mission Name: Explorer 15The Solar Cell Experiment was designed to study the effect of radiation, particularly the artificial radiation belt produced by the Starfish Prime high-altitude nuclear explosion, on solar cells. Four groups of N-on-P solar cells were mounted on the spacecraft. Each group was shielded with a different thickness of sapphire: 0.10, 0.30, 0.50, and 0.80 grams per square cm. Measurements of the solar cell output, at normal illumination incidence and near short-circuit conditions, were made continuously.
Mass: 0.31 kg
