Mission Name: Mars 1The magnetometer on the Mars 1 mission was designed to measure the magnetic field in the vicinity of Earth, in interplanetary space, and at Mars. It was mounted on a boom extending from the orbital compartment of the spacecraft. It detected the weak interplanetary magnetic field with intensities of 3 - 4 gamma with peaks as high as 6 - 12 gamma. The signature of the solar wind was also detected. The spacecraft failed before reaching Mars, so no martian results could be returned.
