NSSDCA ID: 1964-004A-02
Mission Name: Echo 2Echo 2 was optically tracked by the U.S. C+GS (Coast and Geodetic Survey) BC-4 camera network, the SAO (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory) Baker-Nunn camera network, and the U.S.S.R. and other European countries to help establish the PAGEOS worldwide network for tracking geodetic spacecraft. Calculations that had been made for the design of PAGEOS ground stations were confirmed by the optical tracking data received from Echo 2. Optical tracking for geodetic purposes was begun in the latter part of the spacecraft life and continued until its re-entry on June 7, 1969.
