Flux and Energy Spectra of Solar and Galactic Cosmic Ray Particles

ESRO 2 experiment S.72 measured the flux and energy distribution of 35 MeV to 1 GeV protons, and 140 MeV to 1.20 GeV alpha particles as well as the flux of relativistic lithium, beryllium, and boron nuclei. The results may be used to study galactic cosmic rays, solar particles, and occasionally trapped protons. The sensor consisted of three solid-state detectors, two were discs forming a telescope, and one was an open box used in anti-coincidence to eliminate shower events. Pulses in the first disc-shaped detector were sampled by a 127-channel pulse-height analyzer and a height read out and telemetered every half second. The total counts accumulated every 4 sec were also telemetered.
