Soil Mechanics

NSSDCA ID: 1971-008C-02

Mission Name: Apollo 14 Lunar Module /ALSEP
Principal Investigator:Prof. James K. Mitchell

Description

The objective of this experiment was to obtain data on the composition, texture, mechanical properties, and variation of lunar soils. These data were used to formulate, verify, or modify theories of lunar history and processes. Of particular importance were the characteristics of particle size, shape, distribution, density, strength, and compressibility. Data were obtained through photography, observation by the astronauts, and examination of returned samples.

Alternate Names
