Mission Name: Mars 3Stereo was a French-built instrument, the first western-built instrument flown on a Soviet mission. It was designed to measure solar outbursts and to investigate the spatial structure, direction, and mechanism of solar radio emissions in the meter wavelength band (169 MHz), using a boom-mounted antenna in concert with a second Stereo instrument in the same vicinity.
This experiment was not flown on Mars 2. It was mounted on another attempted Mars mission launched contemporaneously with Mars 2 and 3, designated M-71S and then Cosmos 419. Unfortunately this mission failed to launch properly, and only the Mars 3 Stereo flew, severely impacting the experiment, as it was designed to have two instruments at Mars running simultaneously.
