Investigation of Energetic Particle Interactions with the Ionosphere

NSSDCA ID: 1971-089A-03

Mission Name: S71-2
Principal Investigator:Dr. Richard D. Sharp

This experiment complex was designed to investigate energetic particle interactions with the magnetosphere and atmosphere and the resulting ionospheric effects and processes in the D, E, and F regions. The instruments consisted of 18 energetic particle detection systems and a four-frequency, earth-reflecting ionospheric sounder (ERIS). The particle detectors resolved and measured the energy spectra of protons (0.7 keV to 100 MeV), electrons (60 eV to 1.6 MeV), alphas (1.4 keV to 500 MeV), and heavy ions up to an m/q of 32 (0.7 to 12 keV). The ERIS data could be used to determine the electron density profiles in the D region during polar cap and auroral absorption events. The overall performance of the experiment and quality of data were excellent.
