Electron Concentration in the Ionosphere

The impedance probe and the vehicle body comprised two plates of a capacitor. Impedance changes due to the change in dielectric (plasma) characteristics of the capacitor were observed by measuring the resonance frequency of the capacitor (and series inductor) using a variable-frequency driving signal. The electron density was computed from the observed resonance frequency. Frequencies ranged from 0.6 to 10 MHz, which corresponded to electron densities from 5.E3 to 1.E6 electrons/cc.
