Microwave Radiometer

Mission Name: Chang'e 1


The microwave radiometer instrument measures the radiation emanating from the lunar surface in four microwave bands (3 GHz, 7.8 GHz, 19.35 GHz, and 37 GHz). The objective is to profile the lunar regolith thickness. The instrument measures the radiation brightness temperature with a resolution of 0.5 K. The intensity is a function of dielectric constant, temperature, frequency, soil thickness, and survey angle. The four bands give expected penetration thicknesses of 30 m, 20 m, 10 m, and 1 m.
