Mission Name: Chandrayaan 1 Lunar OrbiterThe Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) is designed to determine the major element composition of the lunar surface material. C1XS is an X-ray flourescence spectrometer based on the D-CIXS instrument on SMART-1. It covers the 1-10 keV spectrum detecting X-rays emitted by Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, and Fe when they are excited by solar flare X-rays. The Solar X-ray Monitor (SXM) will concurrently monitor the solar flux. The instrument will use a swept-charged CCD and make measurements with a spatial resolution of 20 km.
