Stretched Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer (S-VISSR), a multi-purpose imaging Vis/IR radiometer, is designed to address more objectives by appropriate blending of the characteristics of spectral coverage and resolution, spatial resolution, and radiometric accuracy. It will cover the full Earth disk, as well as imaging smaller areas of interest, and will operate with five channels of spectral coverage in bands of Vis, NIR, SWIR, MWIR and TIR. The instrument will be used for determining the atmospheric temperature (column/profile), cloud liquid water (column/profile), cloud type, precipitation rate (liquid) at the surface, short-wave Earth surface bi-directional reflectance, sea surface temperature, ocean imagery, land surface temperature, vegetation type and land surface imagery. It is capable of producing visible light and infrared images of the Earth. The S-VISSR will return visible-light images with a resolution of 1.25 kilometers (0.78 mi), and infrared images with a resolution of 5 kilometers (3.1 mi).
