Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS)

NSSDCA ID: 2023-157A-02

Mission Name: Psyche

The Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) will detect, measure, and map the elemental composition of asteroid 16 Psyche. The gamma-ray detector itself is a 0.5-kg, 5.08-by-5.08-cm crystal of high-purity germanium that is contained inside a specialized cryostat cooled to near liquid nitrogen temperatures, about 77.6 K. The instrument is mounted on a 2-meter boom to distance the sensors from background radiation created by energetic particles interacting with the spacecraft and to provide an unobstructed field of view. The instrument team is based at the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University.
