JUICE Magnetometer (J-MAG)

The JUICE Magnetometer (J-MAG) objective is to characterize the Jovian magnetic field, its interaction with the internal magnetic field of Ganymede, and to study the subsurface oceans of Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. The instrument comprises inbound (MAGIBS) and outbound (MAGOBS) 3-axis fluxgate magnetometers and a coupled dark state scalar magnetometer (MAGSCA), all mounted on a 10.5 meter boom.

MAGOBS has two orthogonal Permalloy ring-cores, each of which measures the magnetic field in the two axes in the plane of the ring. MAGIBS comprises two orthogonal ring-core elements, each measuring one axis od the magnetic field, and a coil surrounding both sensors to measure the third axis. MAGSCA uses rubidium atoms laser-excited into a decoupled dark state to measure the scalar magnetic field.

Both fluxgate sensors have a precision of 1 picoTesla in the plus/minus 8 microTesla range and 6 picoTesla in the plus/minus 50 microTesla range. The scalar magnetometer has a nominal measurement range of 0-50000 nanoTesla with a precision of 3 picoTesla. The magnetometers can measure at a 32 or 128 Hz sampling rate.
