Celestial Mechanics (failed)

Mission Name: Pioneer-E
Principal Investigator:Dr. John D. Anderson

The objective of this experiment was to use the available radio tracking data from the Pioneer missions to refine primary determinations of the earth and lunar masses, the astronomical unit, and the oscillating elements of the earth's orbit. The electron density and solar wind measurements made by radio propagation provided an excellent opportunity to remove the systematic effects of the ionosphere and interplanetary medium from the tracking data. This experiment used the onboard spacecraft transponder for the determination of 2-way doppler through the deep space network.
