Mission Name: Ranger 1The Electrostatic Analyzer Experiment was designed to measure the low-energy particle flux as a function of charge sign, energy per unit charge, and direction of travel. The experiment consisted of six electrostatic analyzers pointed in different directions, each with an acceptance angle of about 15 degrees about its normal. The analyzers consist of two curved plates and a Faraday cup charge collector. The sign and magnitude of the deflection voltage is varied over 12 steps, each step allowing only one energy range of proton or electron to be counted. The energy range for electrons is 13.7 - 110 eV and for protons is 13.7 - 5490 eV (singly charged particles). It can detect particle fluxes between 8.6 x 10^4 and 8.6 x 10^11 per square cm per second.
