Mission Name: OSO 1The Dust Particle Detector Experiment comprised microphone micrometeorite detectors and photomultiplier (light flash) detectors. The microphones were plates covering piezoelectric crystals. Impacts on the plate would generate elestic waves, which the piezoelectric crystal would transform into electrical signals. The photomultiplier tube would detect light flashes produced by micrometeoroid impacts, the intensity of the flash was proportional to impact energy.
