Trapped Radiation Detector

Description

A detector composed of four GM tubes and a solid-state device was designed to detect low-energy cosmic rays and protons (from 500 keV to 11 MeV) and electrons (e .gt. 40 keV and e .gt. 150 MeV) while the spacecraft journeyed to and passed Mars. The detectors were oriented at 70 and 135 deg to the spacecraft roll axis. Because a protective shield failed to eject from the spacecraft, the instruments remained covered, the spacecraft did not attain its prescribed trajectory, and no data of any value were received.
