Mission Name: GOES 11The Search and Rescue Satellite System (SARSAT) on the GOES-NEXT series of geostationary meteorological spacecraft receives transmissions from 406 MHz distress beacons and relays the signals to the ground terminal where the signals are processed to produce distress alerts. The SARSAT system is similar to the SARSAT system flown on the NOAA polar orbiting ATN series of spacecraft. Distress emergency beacon signals at 406 MHz are transmitted to the 406 MHz SARSAT receiver on GOES. The signal is then relayed from a 1544.5 MHz transmitter to a geosync ground processor, where the signals are decoded and sent to the USA/SARSAT mission control center for processing, identification, and subsequent action.
