Description

Cosmos 557 was believed to be an unmanned Soyuz-type vehicle. It may have been launched in an attempt to salvage part of the Salyut 2 mission, to serve as a substitute for the Salyut vehicle. It transmitted on a frequency of 922.75 mh, the same as used by Salyut spacecraft.
