The RCA-A commercial communications spacecraft was designed to transmit voice, data, facsimile, and telex messages to and from Alaska, Hawaii, and the continental United States. The three-axis stabilized spacecraft measured approximately 1.2m x 1.6 m for the baseplate and 1.2 m n main body height. The communications system used 6-GHz uplink and 4-GHz downlink signals. Frequency and polarization interleaving of the separate channels was employed to achieve 24 channels, each having a 36-MHz usable bandwidth within the 500-MHz allocation. A broad beam was used to provide communications on all 24 channels with Alaska and the lower 48 states. A spot beam provided communications on 12 of the channels with Hawaii. The spacecraft was successfully launched and placed in a geosynchronous orbit with all systems working satisfactorily. It was positioned at approximately 119 deg west longitude above the equator.
