PRC 34

NSSDCA/COSPAR ID: 1991-088A

Description

This Chinese domestic communications satellite was stranded in an unusable orbit when the CZ-3 launch vehicle's third stage failed 135 seconds after ignition. The satellite was placed into a satisfactory parking orbit; the subsequent boost to transfer orbit failed. The following day, the satellite's apogee kick motor raised its flight path, allowing it to perform limited communications work from a highly elliptical orbit. Shiyong Tongbu Weixing, or Operational Geostationary Communications Satellite, was part of the Chinese Dong Fang Hong 2 series. It was cylindrical, measuring about 2 m in diameter and 2.4 m high. The third stage failure was not expected to affect the scheduled 1992 launches of 2 Australian payloads.
