Luch was a Russian geostationary communications spacecraft launched from the Baykonur Cosmodrome by a Proton rocket. Besides relaying messages to and from the Mir space station, the 2 ton spacecraft will monitor and relay general distress and rescue calls from its parking longitude of 95 deg E.
