GSAT 12, an Indian communications satellite, was launched from Sriharikota Island on 15 July 2011 at 11:18 UT by a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The satellite weighed 1.41 tonnes. GSAT 12 has 12 extended C-band transponders and will be placed in a permanent operating position at 83 degrees E longitude, where it will be co-located with the INSAT 2E and INSAT 4A communications satellites. The satellite will reach across India, beaming telemedicine, remote education, weather forecasts and other public service information to rural communities. GSAT 12 replaces capacity on the INSAT 3B satellite launched in 2000. It has a design life of eight years.
