The Norsk Romsenter (Norwegian Space Centre) signed a contract in July 2015 with UTIAS (University of Toronto, Institute for Aerospace Studies) for the construction of the NORSAT 2 microsatellite. NORSAT-2 is a 15 kg, 20 cm times; 30 cm times; 40 cm satellite under development for the Norwegian Space Centre and Space Norway. The satellite will provide advanced ship tracking and data exchange services over the territorial waters of Norway. The NORSAT-2 satellite will carry a next generation Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver from Kongsberg Seatex, along with a VHF data exchange (VDE) payload that will enable two-way communication at higher data rates than possible with AIS. It features a large deployable directional crossed Yagi VHF antenna.
