Description

Chang'e 7 is a Chinese Space Agency (CNSA) mission to explore the Moon from orbit and on the surface. It is planned to launch in 2024. The science objectives of Chang'e 7 are to: 1) obtain information on lunar inner ring structure, mineral/element components, electric and magnetic fields, heat flow, and graviy fields; 2) study the distribution and sources of lunar water and volatiles and directly confirm the presence and source of water ice on the Moon; 3) image energetic neutral particles in the Earth's magnetotail with high spatial, time, and energy resolution; and 4) study the lunar environment, including the surface magnetic field, lunar dust, and radiation to elucidate the causes of surface magnetic anomalies.

Chang'e 7 consists of a relay satellite, an orbiter, a lander, a rover, and a small flying probe. The total mass is 8200 kg, 415 kg of this is in the various science payloads. The orbiter carries all the other components, releasing them after Earth-Moon transfer and orbital braking, and then will use its five instruments to make scientific observations from orbit. The relay satellite enables a communications link with the south polar region and also supports radio science experiments and VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) measurements with two science payloads.

The lander, carrying the rover and mini-flying probe, will make a soft landing near the lunar south pole, where it will conduct in-situ investigations with its seven science payloads. It will also deploy the mini-flying probe, carrying the Water Molecule and Hydrogen Isotope Analyzer. The rover carries four science payloads

Chang'e 7 is scheduled to launch some time in 2024. After an Earth-Moon transfer and braking into lunar orbit, the relay satellite will be released. The lander, carrying the rover and mini-flying probe, will touch down in the lunar south polar region. After landing, it will deploy the rover and mini-flying probe. The probe will fly into a permanently shadowed region and land there for a short period of time, then fly to a lighted area on the crater rim. The rover will roll off the lander base and use its instruments to perform in-situ observations.
