NSSDCA/COSPAR ID: 1969-083A
ESRO 1/Boreas was an 80 kg, cylindrically shaped, solar cell powered spacecraft carrying eight scientific experiments chosen to measure a comprehensive range of auroral effects. The measurements included auroral luminosity, ionospheric composition and temperature, and the flux and energy spectra of trapped and precipitated energetic particles (electrons from 1 to 400 KeV, protons from 1 KeV to 30 MeV). The satellite was magnetically stabilized and was launched into a low nearly circular orbit on October 1, 1969, resulting in a rather short lifetime of only 52 days. Even so, during this period, a large amount of onboard tape recorder and real-time data were recovered. These data are particularly valuable in correlative studies with the identical satellite ESRO 1/Aurorae that was launched October 3, 1968, into a similar orbit, and operated until June 26, 1970.
