Description

NATO 3-A, the first in a series of NATO defense-related communications satellites, was successfully launched on April 22, 1976. The spacecraft was capable of transmitting voice, data, facsimile and telex messages among military ground stations. It was placed in a synchronous orbit over the Atlantic and, following launch, was operating nominally.
