QuetzSat 1, a communications satellite, was launched from Baikonur on 29 September 2011 at 18:32 UT by a Proton rocket. QuetzSat 1 is part of the SES satellite fleet and will provide coverage over Mexico, North America and Central America. The satellite carries 32 Ku-band transponders and has a design life of 15 years. It will reach a circular geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above the planet where it will match Earth's rotation and appear fixed along the equator at 77 degrees West longitude. QuetzSat 1 is expected to enter operations in October 2011.
