Nimiq 6, a Canadian communications satellite, was launched from Baikonur on 17 May 2012 at 19:12 UT by a Proton-M rocket. The satellite weighed 4500 kg and is equipped with 32 Ku-band transponders and will provide coverage to Canadian users. Nimiq 6 will rely upon its onboard propulsion to reach a circular geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above the planet where it can match Earth's rotation and appear fixed along the equator. It will be located at 91.1 degrees west longitude where it will join an orbiting fleet. The satellite has a design life of 15 years.
