The prototype second generation Orbcomm satellite was carried as a secondary payload on the launch vehicle. It is equipped with upgraded communications equipment and offers a location system for shipping using AIS (Automatic Identification Service) radio transmissions. At 01:37 UTC, it was released into a lower-than planned orbit.
During the ascent, engine No 1 shut down early and the Falcon 9 completed the first part of its mission by extra-long firings of the other eight engines. On reaching orbit it was in a location that made it unsafe to re-start the upper stage to complete the Orbcomm launch because of ISS safety requirements.
