NSSDCA ID: ARIANV1
Ariane V1 is one of the planned launches in the French Ariane mission. The purpose of the mission is to develop a launch vehicle capable of injecting a spacecraft into an elliptical transfer orbit. The mission will be divided into two phases -- development and operational. The objectives of the development phase will be -- (1) to demonstrate the qualifications of the launch vehicle, (2) to check the performance of the subsystems of the launch vehicle during flight, (3) to collect data required for determination of the loads induced on the payload by the launch vehicle, and (4) to declare the launch vehicle operational if two launches are executed successfully. The objectives of the operational launch vehicle will be -- (1) to inject satellites with greater mass into low-energy orbits and (2) to inject satellites with lesser mass into high-energy orbits. The Ariane will be a three-stage launch vehicle with various versions of the Viking engine on the first and second stages and with the HM7 engine on the third stage. Passenger experiments were authorized on board the second, third and fourth development flights.
