Education Report: NSSDC Supports Network Access for Howard B. Owens Science Center

Volume 11, Number 4, December 1995
By James Thieman and Nathan James

Following the retirement of Valerie Thomas, NSSDC's James Thieman and Nathan James assumed co-leadership roles in the Education Committee of Goddard's Space Science Data Operations Office (SSDOO). The committee has been working with the Howard B. Owens Science Center (HBOSC), which serves the Prince George's County school system as a science resource center. Recently, with some assistance from the committee, the science center, which is near Goddard, has realized a dream and received sufficient grant funds to upgrade its computer laboratory from old Apple IIe computers to new Power Macintosh computers, including a dedicated server that will hopefully be connected to the Internet in the near future. It is anticipated that NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) expertise can be applied to the new computer capabilities to assist in curriculum development for the 90,000 elementary school students as well as the teachers and general community members that use the facility each year.
