END_OBJECT = TEXT END Welcome to the Planets (TM) This document contains general information about this CD-ROM and the "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" program. The information is presented in the following seven sections: Introduction Starting the Program Curriculum Guide Troubleshooting Directory Structure For Additional Information Copyrights and Trademarks 1. Introduction This Planetary Data System (PDS) CD-ROM contains a collection of images and associated information from the U.S. planetary exploration program presented in two multimedia formats: 1) Macintosh and Windows projectors created using Macromedia Director 4.0.4 (TM) and 2) HTML files. The user can view the data on Macintosh computers with a minimum display screen of 640 x 480 picture elements using the Macintosh projector named WTP.MAC, included in the top level directory of the CD- ROM. The user can view the data on Windows computers with a minimum VGA display screen of 640 x 480 picture elements using the Windows projector named WTP.EXE, included in the WTP directory of the CD-ROM. The HTML file named WELCOME.HTM, is also located in the top-level directory. The user can run this file using the HTML client software. The WELCOME.HTM file does not have all of the functions available in the Macintosh and Windows program, but allows access to all of the text and images on all platforms for which there exists HTML client software. All still images used in the presentations are provided in CompuServe GIF format in the GIF subdirectory, and most are available in JPEG format in the JPEG subdirectory. 2. Starting the Program A Macintosh user runs "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" by double-clicking on the WTP.MAC icon. To achieve better performance on Windows machines, PC users may run the installation program, PCINSTAL.EXE, which copies the executable to a user-selected subdirectory of the hard disk. After PCINSTAL.EXE has been run, "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" should be run from the hard disk. To do this, select the subdirectory specified during installation (\WTP was the default), and open WTP.EXE. Please note that even if the executable is run from the hard disk, the CD-ROM is necessary to use "Welcome to the Planets (TM)". As an alternative, PCs users may access "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" directly from the CD by using Windows' File Manager to run the WTP.EXE file, located in the WTP subdirectory. Disk drives on Windows systems are referenced as drives A:, B:, ..., Z:. The CD-ROM drive should be configured to be the last letter drive on your system. See the manual for your CD-ROM for instructions for determining and setting the drive letter. If your CD drive is not the last drive letter, you will need to interact as WTP.EXE searches for your CD drive. Run WTP.EXE and answer to each warning dialog until the CD-ROM is located. To view the HTML file, open (double-click on) the WELCOME.HTM file on the root level of the CD-ROM. Should NETSCAPE be installed on your machine, this script should open it and access the first "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" page. If you have another type of HTML client software installed, open that program first. Once the program is running, select the OPEN LOCAL or OPEN FILE option under the FILE menu, and enter the path for your computer to WELCOME.HTM in the top-level directory of the CD- ROM. General instructions for navigating the hypertext files are included in the VOLINFO.TXT file in the DOCUMENT directory of the CD- ROM. NOTE: There is a driver patch in the [PATCH.SUN] subdirectory which must be installed for a Sun to access the files on this disk. Please read the file PATCH.TXT for installation instructions. 3. Curriculum Guide The Curriculum Guide supplied with "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" is designed to be read from within the program using Adobe Acrobat Reader version 2.1. The program checks to see if the reader exists within an Adobe Acrobat folder (or on Windows machines, an ACROREAD subdirectory) at the root level of any drive on the computer. Should the reader software be installed in another subdirectory (such as "MYDRIVE:APPLICATIONS" or similar), the program will not see it and will return a message to that effect. In this case the user has three options: 1) open the Acrobat PDF file from within Acrobat Reader wherever it resides on the computer (CURRIC.PDF is located on the CD-ROM in the CURRICULUM subdirectory), 2) move the reader software up out of the subdirectory in which it resides, or 3) open the Microsoft Word Version 6 document file (CURRIC.MAC or CURRIC.WIN) located in the CURRICULUM subdirectory. To install Adobe Acrobat Reader version 2.1, run either the ACROREAD.MAC or ACROREAD.WIN (Macintosh and Windows, respectively) installation program. These files are located on the CD-ROM in the ADOBE folder. However, the user would still need to install Reader at the root level of any drive for the file to open from within the "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" program. 4. Troubleshooting Macintosh On Macintosh machines, there is a known conflict between Macromedia Director projectors and the product called RamDoubler. We have found that when RamDoubler is installed, the sound files do not play. If you read rather than listen to the image captions, RamDoubler has no effect on the program. However, if you find the sound does not play, disable the RamDoubler extension, restart, and see if the trouble goes away. We have had instances where the WTP.MAC alias (icon) located at the root directory of the CD-ROM does not work properly. If this should occur, open the program using the WTP.MAC file located in the WTP folder. A better option for frequent users is to create a new alias for WTP.MAC, and place it in a convenient location on the host computer. PC/Windows machines On some PCs, instead of clicking the mouse to leave the introductory "Welcome to the Planets (TM)" screen and begin the program, the user needs to hit the RETURN key. We have found on PCs that sometimes the text on the Planet Info pages is misaligned. Check within the Windows Control Panels folder under Display to see if there is a font size default. If the font is set to large, reset it to small and the fonts should be more regular within "Welcome to the Planets (TM)". In "Welcome to the Planets (TM)", fonts are automatically mapped to common Windows fonts, such as Arial or MS Sans Serif. The mapping is outlined in the file "fontmap.txt", located in the WTP subdirectory on the CD-ROM. Should your machine lack fonts listed there, it will do its own re-mapping and try to approximate the others. If your captions overrun text boxes, or should they be irregular in other ways, check your font options and see if you can obtain the fonts listed in fontmap.txt. 5. Directory Structure The following diagram shows the organization and contents of files and directories on this CD-ROM. Directory names are enclosed in square brackets ([]).Indents are used to indicate subdirectories and their contents. Note that the image files on this CD-ROM are not supported on the VAX/VMS computers because they do not have Extended Attribute Records.
