Speckle Imaging of Jupiter, July 17, 1994 This image of Jupiter was taken in the near infrared methane absorption band (8800 angstroms wavelength, 350 angstroms wide) at 07:05 UT (12:05 PDT) July 17. At this time, fragment C of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was impacting the planet just behind the limb at the lower left. (North is up, East is left.) In addition, the impact site of fragment A has just rotated into view, also on the lower left. The brightening in that area may indicate the continued presence of material uplifted by the comet into the upper atmosphere some 10 hours after the impact of fragment A.
