Software is not on CD-ROMs (Please see following description for more
information.)
Note
- Volume I (November 1991) contains four discs covering absolute ecliptic
latitudes greater than 50 degrees.
- Volume II (June 1994) contains seven discs covering absolute ecliptic
latitudes less than 50 degrees plus coadded images covering the entire sky.
(Individual HCON images from Volume I are not duplicated on Volume II.)
- The complete set of individual HCON images consists of both Volume I and
Volume II.
- The volumes may be purchased separately, but individual discs in the
volumes may not be purchased separately.
Information
Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) Sky Survey Atlas (ISSA) from the
Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) . The ISSA was designed
to facilitate studies of diffuse emission from the Galactic interstellar
medium and, generally, objects outside the solar system. It consists of
coadded and three individual hours-confirmed sky surveys (HCONs) at 12, 25,
60 and 100 micron wavelengths. More than 96% of the sky is covered at
several-arcminute resolution. The sky is represented as a set of discrete
12.5 x 12.5 degree images, in Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format,
centered at 10 degree intervals with 1.5 arcminute pixels.
Unlike the original IRAS Sky Flux images, ISSA images have had scan stripes
removed and a model of the zodiacal emission subtracted, enabling coaddation
of the HCONs. Through coaddition the sensitivity to faint, low surface
brightness emission was improved by a factor of about 3 to 5.
Standard astronomical image analysis packages are capable of ingesting the
standard FITS images. PC users with Windows have an option of requesting
FITSView software from NSSDC to read the CD-ROMs. You can obtain the
software via
anonymous FTP
or for $5.00 from the
Request Coordination Office. A document called
"
FITS General Information ," available from the
FITS Support Office
at NASA/GSFC, contains a section on FITS software. A program included on the
disks can be used to determine which ISSA field covers a particular position on
the sky.
If users require ISSA data covering a single or a small number of fields you
need not use the CD-ROMs. The same data are available over the network
through an
ISSA Data Collection Atlas
that allows you to specify sky coordinates or the name of an astronomical
object in order to retrieve the relevant ISSA data.
Laypersons or researchers interested in simply browsing the ISSA images are
referred to the SkyView
on-line service.
