Information
These CD-ROM's contain the archive of raw images from the Mars
Global Surveyor camera (The Mars Orbital Camera, or MOC). There
are two distinct sets of CD-ROMs in this collection. The first
set contains images in decompressed format from the pre-mapping
aerobraking orbits and the second set contains compressed images
from the mapping orbit. The images are stored with PDS labels
and have undergone packet decommutation, removal of the MOC
communications protocol headers, and reformatting. No additional
geometric or radiometric processing or calibration was done.
The first set starts at volume 1 and contains raw images as
Decompressed Standard Data Products (DSDP's). These images are
all from the initial aerobraking orbit phases which preceded the
mapping orbits. The CD's also contain ancillary data files and
browse images in JPEG format, HTML documents that support a web
browser interface to the CD's, an index file that tabulates the
contents of the CD, and documentation files.
The second set, from the MGS science mapping orbit, starts at
volume 1001. These volumes contain compressed images. The CD
also contains ancillary data files that support the MOC SDP
archive. These files include an index file ('imgindx.tab') that
tabulates the contents of the CD and gives useful ancillary
information, and documentation files. Decompression software is
included on the CD for Windows and Unix machines, there is no
decompression software provided for Macintosh.
