Information

These CD-ROMs contain archive data on martian topography from the Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MGS-MOLA). The first two volumes (MGSL_0001 and _0002) contain data from the Orbit Insertion Phase of the mission. The later volumes (MGSL_1001 and above) contain data from the Mapping Phase of the mission. (Volume MGSL_2001 also contains some data from the orbit insertion phase.) The data consist of raw data in Aggregated Experiment Data Records (AEDRs, aggregations of the MOLA raw data containing engineering data for each shot, calibration information, shot transmission time and receive times), data from the AEDR's with orbit corrections applied (Precision Experiment Data Records or PEDRs), and gridded products derived from PEDRs, Experiment Gridded Data Records (EGDRs). The EGDR is a topographic map of Mars based on altimetry data acquired by the MOLA instrument and accumulated over the course of the mission so far. Also on the first two volumes are GIF images of topography profiles derived from the PEDRs, to be used as a means of browsing the PEDR data set.

Volumes in the MGSL_10-- series contain the AEDR's from the mapping phase of the mission stored as binary data files. Volumes in the MGSL_20-- series contain PEDR's, EGDR's, and Spherical Harmonics Data Records (SHADR's, a numerical transform of the EGDR's). The PEDR's are stored as binary data files and also as ASCII tables. The data sets contain information on the timing and position of laser shots and returns, and other instrument parameters for each shot. The Version 1 EGDR's (Volumes MGSL_2001 to MGSL_2023) are in the form of ASCII tables with one row for each 1 by 1 degree, 1/2 by 1/2 degree (and for volume MGSL_2023 1/4 by 1/4 degree) latitude-longitude bin, from 90 to -90 degrees latitude and from 0 to 360 degrees longitude. A row of data contains (for each bin, or 1 x 1 degree square): mid-bin longitude, mid-bin latitude, mean measured planetary radius in the bin, mean areoid radius in the bin, measured topography, and number of observations. The version 2 EGDR's (Volumes MGSL_2024 and above) are in the form of images (.img files) which can be read using the NASAView software. These images have resolutions up to 1/16 degree starting with volume MGSL_2032. Detailed descriptions of the content of the data files is stored on the CD-ROM. The MOLA ranges and precision orbit data are preliminary, and will be revised as knowledge of the spacecraft and the martian gravity field improves. The CD-ROM has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g., PC, Macintosh, and Sun) may access the data. Specifically, it is formatted according to the ISO-9660 level 1 Interchange Standard.

1. Incomplete Set.  NSSDC has not yet received one or more volumes of this set. You will be charged only for those volumes in the set that we have in stock. Please check back periodically to order any remaining volumes which have arrived.
