SDDPT Mariner 4,5,6,7,9,10 and Pioneer Venus Radio Science on CD-WO

Availability: At NSSDC, Ready for Offline Distribution (or Staging if Digital)

This data set contains Pioneer Venus orbiter and Mariner 4,5,6,7, 9, and 10 Radio Science/Tracking and Data Handling Tapes copied directly to CD-WO. The tapes contained data from radio occultation experiments, in which the intensity and phase changes observed in the spacecraft telemetry signal as the spacecraft was occulted by the planet were used to infer properties of the atmosphere. Data for other radio science experiments as well as spacecraft tracking and data handling information are also included. The input for the compact discs was 7-track and 9-track magnetic tape that, in most cases, was at least 15-20 years old.

Each CD-ROM disc has been formatted so that a variety of computer systems (e.g. IBM PC, Macintosh, Sun, VAX) may access the data. Specifically, the discs are formatted according to the ISO 9660 level 1 Interchange Standard, and file attributes are specified by Extended Attribute Records (XARs). It is planned that the data on these CD-WO's will be restored by the Radio Science Subnode of the Planetary Data System at some future time.

An RSS_INFO.TXT is located on each CD in the series which correlates the tape ID with available descriptions of the tapes' contents and the tracks. The tape descriptions and tracks were obtained from the exterior tape labels and available information contained in the MIPS On-line tape database. More detailed descriptions may be available from the analysts' catalogs. Some tapes were found to have incorrect track information during processing. Please consult the RSS_INFO.TXT on the last CD volume of this dataset for accurate information on tracks, additionally the archive CD volume is also included for each tape. Accompanying each tape on the disc, there is a log file which documents SDDPT processing history.

This data set was created at JPL as part of its Science Digital Data Preservation Task (SDDPT), and a copy was provided to NSSDC for safekeeping. Numerous SDDPT data sets are not readily usable, as they represent bit copies of old data tapes and do not contain user documentation. Persons interested in ordering these data should contact the NSSDC person listed for this data set.

This is SDDPT data set code 339B, volume ID's RSS_2201 to RSS_2214.
