Magnetic Field Experiment (MFE)

NSSDCA ID: 1992-064A-02

Mission Name: Freja
Principal Investigator:Dr. Larry J. Zanetti

The sensor was a triaxial fluxgate magnetometer mounted on a 2 meter boom, measuring DC and AC magnetic field vectors. The DC B-field range was +/- 65,000 nT, with an accuracy of +/- 1 nT; AC wave field was monitored in the band of 1.5-128 Hz, with a range of +/-500 nT. In addition, spin axis directional component of the waves was also monitored through a separate (7th) channel, so as to detect Helium ion gyrofrequency at 160 Hz, without having to extract spin modulation. The sampling rate for the DC and AC vector fields was, normally, 128 samples/sec, while for the spin axis scaler channel it was 256 samples/sec; an onboard FFT unit provided wave amplitude of the scaler channel with a resolution of 2 Hz. Calibration signals were periodically injected into all three preamplifiers. The instrument is inoperational since June 1995.
