Telecommunications Description

For the STS S-band Forward Link, Spacelab commands were compiled by the Marshall SFC, routed to JSC Mission Control Center and uplinked via TDRSS at 32/72 kbps. The Return Link was via TDRSS on S- or K-band. The S-band linked at 96/192 kbps. The Ku-band Signal Processor (KUSP) worked on 3 channels: Channel 1 sent Orbiter data at 192 kbps; Channel 2 sent Spacelab data from the IML-1 Payload High Rate Multiplexer (HRM) at 250 or 500 kbps and at 1 or 2 Mbps, or sent Orbiter operations recorder dumps at 960 or 1024 kbps; Channel 3 sent Spacelab payload data at between 2 and 48 Mbps, or video data from 20 Hz to 4.2 MHz.
